A self-audit

The Blame & Ownership Cycle

Changing roles is a challenge. Here's a 10-minute assessment to help you take charge of your future and find your next opportunity. And it starts with one small step you can take this week.

A ring split in half: ownership above the line, blame below. Each segment fills as you complete a line. OWNERSHIP BLAME

Most people fill the bottom half in ninety seconds and then sit staring at the top half. That gap is the whole diagnosis.

Step 1 · the bottom half

What’s standing between you and the role you want

Six lines, fast, without editing yourself. Write what you’d say to a friend, not what you’d say to a recruiter.

Step 2 · the top half

What you could do about each one

Take your six lines in order. For each, write one move you could make without anyone’s permission. Not a solution — a move. “Update my CV” and “refresh my LinkedIn” don’t count: you have done those, and they changed nothing. If a line has no move, leave it blank and notice which one it was.

Step 3 · the record

What you have actually done so far

Your competence was never the question. The question is how much of the past months went into waiting. List what you have actually done — including how well the support around you is really performing, and how long you have been waiting on it. Then mark each one: did it depend on you, or on someone else coming back to you?

Action taken Depended on…

Mark your actions above and this line will tell you something you already suspect.

Step 4 · the only line that matters

One move this week that needs nobody’s yes

Pick it from your top half. In my experience the move is rarely tactical — it is something in you: where you stay too soft, too tough, or simply keep waiting. Small and specific beats ambitious and vague.
